Marco Essig, MD, PhD, FRCPC is currently the Professor and Chair of the Radiology Department at the University of Manitoba, and Medical Director of the Diagnostic Imaging Program with the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority.
Dr. Essig received his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg and his doctorate in neurological sciences at the Medical Faculty of the University of Heidelberg. Dr. Essig did his internship and residency training in radiology at the German Cancer Research Center and the University Hospital at Heidelberg. He pursued two fellowships, one in Neuroradiology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Department of Radiology, in Iowa City and a second in Interventional Radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School, Department of Radiology and Neurosurgery, in Boston. He completed his Neuroradiology training at the University of Homburg, Germany
After completion of residency, Dr. Essig earned a Board Certification in Diagnostic Radiology in 2001, at which point he became Assistant Medical Director of the Department of Radiology. In 2006, after his Board Certification in Neuroradiology, he was appointed as a Professor of Radiology at Heidelberg Medical School and worked as an Associate Medical Director of the Department of Radiology. From 2011 to August 2013 he worked as a full professor at the department of Neuroradiology of the University of Erlangen, Germany. In September 2013 he was appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Radiology, University of Manitoba and Medical Director Diagnostic Imaging for the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Since April 2019, he serves as the Manitoba Provincial Medical Lead for Diagnostic Imaging.
Dr. Essig is Author on more than 250 peer-reviewed articles and Author of more than 20 book chapters.
Dr. Essig is a valued member of numerous societies, including the Deutsche Roentgengesellschaft, the Canadian Society of Radiology, the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA), the American Society of Neuroradiology, the European Society of Neuroradiology, and the European Society of Radiology. For the European society, he served on the Scientific Advisory Board and is a founding member of the ESR subcommittee on imaging biomarkers. From 2011 to 2015 he served as a member of the Neuroimaging subcommittee of the RSNA. Since 2017 he is member of the Committee of Scientific Affairs of the RSNA and since December 2018 the President of the Canadian Heads of Academic Radiology (CHAR).
He is a member of Investigative Radiology, Canadian Association of Radiology Journal and Der Radiologe. Dr. Essig is a debuty editor for Neuroimaging at the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (JMRI) and served as a reviewer of several non-radiological, radiological journals including Nature, Science and Academic Institutions including the German Research Foundation, the French Research Foundation, the Canadian Institution of Health Research (CIHR), the Institute Cancer de France, the University of Bordeaux, France, the University of Leiden, Netherlands, the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, the University of California, San Diego and the University of Southern California. He has been invited Visiting Professor at multiple national and international Radiology Departments.
