[II-S14-05] Interventions in Adults with Congenital Heart Disease: The Melody Valve and Stenting of Coarctation of The Aorta

Frank Fai Ing (Division of Pediatric Cardiology, Children's Hospital Los Angels, USA)

Two of the important congenital heart disease lesions found in adults are surgically placed pulmonary valves that become dysfunctional in adulthood and coarctation of the aorta. Both of these lesions are amenable to transcatheter interventions obviating the need for a surgical repair. The purpose of this lecture is to review these two interventions in order to have a better understanding of how to optimize results and outcomes for the audience. For transcatheter replacement of the dysfunctional pulmonary valve, we will specifically review the implantation of the Melody valve. We will review the indications for this procedure, the techniques for implantation, the various potential problems and pitfalls of the procedure, and how to avoid and overcome potential complications. We will also review the use of stents for treatment of coarcatation of the aorta. We will review the anatomy of the coarctation, the indications for stenting, the choice of stents and balloons, technical considerations, and management of complications.
