[I-PD03-1] Viral Myocarditis in the Pediatric Population in the USA
Viral myocarditis is an inflammatory myocardial disease that ranges in severity from mild symptoms to cardiogenic shock or even sudden cardiac death. There remain challenges and controversies in the diagnosis and treatment of this condition. The objectives of this talk will be to: (1) review the epidemiology, most common viral etiologies, clinical presentation, diagnosis, management and outcome of viral myocarditis in children in the U.S. and (2) provide an update on myocarditis associated with SARS-CoV-2 in children. Myocarditis remains an important clinical problem that is without evidence-based treatments. In order to improve outcomes ongoing investigations should be encouraged using animal and cell-based pre-clinical models, as well as multi-center clinical studies.
