The 73rd Conference of the Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences Yoshinori OKADE |
The Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences (JSPEHSS) is engaged in various activities aimed at “contributing to realizing individual well-being as well as a fair cohesive society through various activities related to physical education, sports and health.”
In this endeavor, the 73rd conference will be held at Doshisha University under the theme of "The Future of 'Physical Education and Sports' for intellectual, moral and physical development. "
Since 2000, the international community's recognition of the value of sport has grown rapidly. Society seeks answers as to what physical education and sports professionals should do in order for sports to function as an effective tool to achieve a better society.
In this context, Japan has started to move toward the post-Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic games. Here, attempts are also rapidly underway to promote education based on the value of sports. On the other hand, governance related issues pose serious problems both in Japan and overseas for the realization of high-quality sports and development efforts through sports on the premise of high quality. In addressing these issues, it is important to build consensus with various stakeholders.
It is our honor to hold this conference and we hope it is an opportunity to create a rich network of diverse stakeholders.

We are pleased to announce that the 73rd Conference of the Japan Society of Physical Education, Health and Sport Sciences will be held at Doshisha University Imadegawa Campus in 2023. The main theme of the 73rd Conference is "The Future of 'Physical Education and Sports' for intellectual, moral and physical development. "
Since Doshisha University was the birthplace of university physical education in Japan, we set the theme of the conference to introduce the idea of Joseph Hardy Neesima, the founder of Doshisha University, who incorporated physical education into the university.
Physical education and sports have played a major educational role in physical and personal development in many sports activities in clubs, companies, and local clubs as well as in physical education in elementary, junior-high, high school and university school education. As time goes by, various ways of viewing sports beyond their educational significance have been established, but the educational value of physical education and sports will never be lost no matter how much sports activities based on various values flourish. Society is becoming more complex, IT is advancing, and the virtual world is about to become a reality; we believe that now is the time to confirm and respect the educational value in physical education and sports more than ever. We hope that this conference will be an opportunity for you as conference attendees to reconsider the various possibilities of physical education and sports based on cultural and educational values, and the necessity of physical education and sports in society.
On the first day of the conference, we are inviting Dr. Eiji Hatta, President and Chancellor of Doshisha University, to talk about how Joseph Hardy Neesima thought about physical education in school education (especially in universities) 150 years ago, while reviewing the history of physical education and sports at Doshisha University. It will be our honor to share this invaluable experience with you.
The organizing committee strives to make the conference as fruitful as possible for all of you. We look forward to seeing you in Kyoto.
