氏らは,MIM製Ti-6Al-4V合金において,粉末冶金プロセスにおける系統的・多面的な研究により,鍛造材に匹敵する高疲労強度を実現し,その支配因子を明らかにした.特に,結晶粒径と最大気孔径の比によって疲労強度への影響メカニズムが変化するという知見は,微細構造の設計指針を与え,Ti合金のみならず,その他の元素系にも拡張が可能であると考えられ,本賞に相応しい研究業績であり高く評価できる.
