International forecasting agencies suggest that economic growth per capita of population will be faster in Asia than in any other region. With an increasing demand of higher living standards and a rapidly growing population, the resource shortage is even more pressing. It has long been understood that the stage of a country’s development has important implications for its use of metal raw materials. The Southeast Asia region includes large resource-rich countries like Indonesia and the Philippines, resource-poor but otherwise rich city states like Singapore, countries in the early stages of their economic development like Myanmar, Cambodia and Laos and countries in the medium stages of development like Malaysia, Thailand and Vietnam. The infrastructure development in these countries will be a driver of metal demand, as will growth in the region’s manufacturing industries and the development of the infrastructure in transportation and real estate sectors.
Given the number of countries involved and the differences between them, the issue of metal supply to the region is complex. However, the paper collects the related data to identify the selected metal flow i.e. gold, copper and zinc including the primary sources from mining and the secondary recycling sources within the region. In order to sustain the economic growth of the region the balance of some selected metal need to be achieved. The traditional development models rooted in “take, make and waste”, need to be replaced by alternative models of growth to ensure long-term sustainability through the circular economy. In a circular economy, growth is decoupled from the use of scarce resources through disruptive technology and business models based on longevity, renewability, reuse, repair, upgrade, refurbishment, capacity sharing, and dematerialization.
