日本の古代以来の産金は砂金洗取によるもであった。しかし、中世後期になり15世紀の対外貿易の活発化は、金銀銅の必要性につながり、一方では良好な砂金採取地の枯渇が山金（鉱脈金）採鉱を促した。山金採鉱は露頭掘で始まっている。その確実な開始時期は不明であるが、黒川金山と湯之奥金山の操業は、作業テラスから出土した陶磁器の年代から、15世紀末から16世紀初頭と推測されている。砂金は、砂礫を汰板（ゆりいた）にとり水中で金粒を淘汰した。山金の場合は汰りわけに先立って、こなし (粉成)が必要である。採鉱した塊状の金鉱石を回転臼(金挽臼)で細かく砕いて砂金状にしなければならない。搗き臼や摺臼も併用されたであろう。鉱脈露頭掘の遺構に関連した作業テラスには、回転臼が残されている。このことから、山金採鉱は回転臼の使用によって成立したと考えられる。
Gold was produced by placer-gold washing in ancient Japan. Primary-gold (vein-gold) mining began from the late-Medieval Period through circumstances of active foreign trade in the 15th century. The ages of the oldest vein-gold mines was supposed from the unearthed ceramic wares, which indicated the ages of the late 15th and early 16th century. Gold ores taken from outcrops of vein need to be pulverized in order to apply the gravity separation using a pan. In medieval Japan millstones were introduced as a necessary pulverizing tool.
