Mine water often contains heavy metals such as iron (Fe) and manganese (Mn). Oxidative water treatment processes for these waters typically result in the formation of biologically-active sludges consisting of oxides of Fe and Mn. This study investigated the possibility of reusing such sludge waste for the further treatment of water contaminated with highly toxic arsenite (As(III)). By constructing continuous-flow columns (filled with Fe- and Mn-sludges either mixed or separately) under the influence of different hydraulic retention times (HRT), the effect of individual sludges on the oxidative removal of As(III) was studied, and the possible mechanism was explored.
