[1601-04-02] Recent Lithium-Ion Battery Recycling Industry in South Korea

The Korea has been found as a representative resources- poor country. Furthermore, battery minerals such as cobalt and nickel are limited to a few countries. Therefore, the Korean government has recognized the importance of establishing a secure supply-chain of critical mineral for the domestic battery industries by securing critical minerals such as Li, Co, and Ni through recycling, and the government has supported small business recycling companies by R&D funding. A lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycler, Sungeel Hitech, has operated sucessfully the LIB recycling process based on the hydrometallurgical route, and some other companies developed some new processes to increase the recycling process efficiencies. The objective of this article is to summarize the commercial lithium ion battery (LIB) recycling processes in Korea and to suggest new direction for LIB recycling.
