New evidence is accumulating that late-onset epilepsy of unknown etiology is associated with the risk of developing dementia in elderly people. Interestingly, recent clinicopathological reports using brain specimens resected from patients with refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (rTLE) have shown that deposition of amyloid-b protein and hyperphosphorylation of tau protein, similar to those of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) brains, are found in rTLE brains, indicating a potential pathophysiological link between AD and epilepsy. The goal of the session is to enable the participants to better understand why interdisciplinary research between dementia and epilepsy is significant to create novel and promising therapeutic strategies for dementia.
