ProfTissa has been recognized for his exceptional contributions to global neurological education and his exemplary leadership within the community of young neurologists. In 2017, he was honored with the inaugural Ted Munsat Award by the World Federation of Neurology, highlighting his significant impact on the field. He received the inaugural Priscilla Kincaid-Smith Award from the Australian Medical Association (AMA) for his outstanding work as an academic neurologist.His expertise extends to international publication and public speaking, with over 300 publications and more than 200 invitations to present at various forums. With over 110,000 citations and an impressive h-index of 78, his work has left a profound impact on the field of clinical neurology.

Prof. Wijeratne played a pivotal role in founding the Australian and New Zealand Headache Society , He introduced the Steps4migraine campaign, further advancing headache care and research.
As of 2023, Prof. Wijeratne holds the distinction of being the most highly cited practicing Headache Neurologist in Australia . He is a world expert in PCNS.He is the President of the Asian Regional Consortium for Headaches (ARCH), In recognition of his services to medicine as a neurologist, he was awarded the prestigious Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM)
