Clinical and scientific importance of brain-gut interactions has been well recognized. Concept of brain-gut interactions is functional and reciprocal communication between the gut and the brain. Influence of gut-derived signal emphasizes the term gut-brain interaction. Prototype of disorders of gut-brain interaction as the main pathophysiology is irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Gut microbiota are crucial factors of driving force of IBS. Acute bacterial enterocolitis is a trigger of post-infectious IBS. Gut microbiota in IBS patients differ from those in healthy subjects. They stimulate pathway of visceral perception, sensitize the brain regions, influece on neurotransmitter production, evoke neuroinflammation, and produce short chain fatty acids. Further research on brain-gut interactions is warranted.
