A two-stage nonlinear equalization scheme based on a reduced Volterra filter and an artificial neural network (ANN) is studied for energy-efficient short-reach optical interconnects using 1.3-μm directly-modulated membrane lasers on silicon (DML-on-Si) and PAM-M signals.
