Polarization-modulated signals can be demodulated via direct detection of Stokes vectors. We analyze noise characteristics of Stokes vector receivers and derive bit-error-rate formulae for the cubic polarization-modulation format in the circuit-noise-, shot-noise-, and beat-noise-limited states.
