Recently, the scope of the medicine has been expanding, and living cells have been clinically used as a pharmaceutical drug. For the effective development of cell-based medicine, one of the key issues is to manipulate living cell function, particularly in vivo. To achieve this goal, it is essential to collaborate multidisciplinary among bio-engineering and medicine over the fields of pharmaceutical sciences. In this symposium, we define "artificial modification and/or control of cell function" as "cell editing", and focus on developing new materials and utilizing those materials both in cultured cells and body. Actually, "cell editing" involves a variety of approaches based on molecular-biology, engineering materials, cell-surface engineering, and scaffold-technology, furthermore, understanding and developing a model of the microenvironment in disease tissues. In this symposium, we invite active young researchers who develop the important technologies for "cell editing", e.g., new material technologies to create artificial organelles, cutting-edge technologies for in vivo functional nucleic acid delivery, bio-interface control technologies based on polymer-based biomaterials, novel disease models based on 3D-culture system as a tool for artificial cell function tuning, practical methods for in vivo cell editing and cell transplantation using mRNA, in vivo cell delivery using cell surface engineering. We will discuss how to tackle the issue to achieve "in vivo cell editing" from the multidisciplinary viewpoint.
