Development of novel drug delivery systems (DDS) is highly required for the efficient cancer therapy. In particular, novel DDS with better targeting and controlled release ability is eagerly awaited, and various attempts have been made to achieve this goal. In this symposium, we will introduce drug targeting based on amino acid clusters, boron neutron capture therapy utilizing metabolism-controlled drug delivery systems and enhanced antitumor activity by controlled release of hydrophobic drugs from liposomes. These all approaches based on new concepts and are expected as next generation DDS. In addition, we will introduce the optimization of administration method to obtain the better pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of drugs, namely, efficient lung cancer therapy by using intrapulmonary administration of nucleic acid and nanoparticles, and enhancement therapeutic effect of antibody drugs by using intraperitoneal administration. Based on these presentations, we will share recent challenges and perspectives of DDS technologies in the development of cancer therapy.
