[S25] The role pharmacists should play in the AST, as well as the education needed to enable them to fulfill that role

Fri. Mar 27, 2020 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM [Room U] Swan (1F)

Organizers: Arufumi Shiota (Aichi Medical Univ Hosp), Hiroshige Mikamo (Aichi Medical Univ Hosp), Kana Matsumoto (Doshisha Women's Coll Lib Arts)

The addition of the Antimicrobial Stewardship Team (AST) was newly established in the medical fee revision of 2018. The most noteworthy aspect within this revision is that pharmacists were specified in the "full-time" requirement necessary for the fee calculation. As a result, the number of full-time AST pharmacists has increased since the addition, and each facility is now trying to ascertain the applicable roles and means of fostering these pharmacists. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical education in this field should also be further developed. With this goal of development in mind, a symposium that incorporates pharmacists with full-time experience in AST roles as symposiasts and chairs is being organized. The purpose of this symposium will be to clarify the AST roles that pharmacists should fulfill. In fact, the symposium will discuss how pharmacists can be fostered from the perspective of both educating pharmacists and pharmaceutical science education itself.
First, a doctor familiar with the specific field of infectious disease will explain the expectations of AST pharmacists, pharmaceutical science education in the field of infection, and the latest treatment for the infectious disease field. Then, pharmacists with experience in AST activities will explain the actual AST activities from a variety of different viewpoints, including from the viewpoints of university hospitals, large-scale hospitals, small and medium-sized hospitals, and university pharmacy departments. These pharmacists will also touch on clinical outcomes, research, and education (regarding pharmacy and pharmaceutical science). I hope this symposium can be an opportunity to consider the role pharmacists should play in the AST, as well as the education needed to enable them to fulfill that role.
