[S36] Power of natural products 6: Drug development based on natural products from academia

Sat. Mar 28, 2020 9:00 AM - 11:00 AM [Room A] Room A (2F)

Organizers: Sachiko Tsukamoto (Global Cent Nat Res Sci, Grad Sch Pharm Sci, Kumamoto Univ), Masami Ishibashi (Grad Sch Pharm Sci, Chiba Univ)

After the modern era, drug development has been conducted based on natural product chemistry. In 1990s, the chemical libraries containing a large number of compounds prepared through the method of the combinatorial chemistry were constructed, and the high-throughput screening technology using the chemical libraries were enthusiastically expected to afford new medicines from the library. However, only one anticancer agent, Nexavar, has been found from the library and approved for clinical use by FDA. This poor result suggested the limited chemical space covered by products in the combinatorial chemistry, while nature-derived products are substantially, structurally diverse. Although drug discovery from natural sources is based on time-consuming study, a large portion of new pharmaceutical candidates are still originated from natural sources.
In this symposium, three researchers in academia and a coordinator in AMED, involving in drug development from natural sources, plants, microorganisms, and marine organisms, will show their recent progress. The mission and vision of the nature-derived drug development will be discussed.
