Gold has been treasured by mankind as a symbol of wealth and beauty since ancient times. However, few people know that gold has been used as a medicine for thousands of years. Gold has long been traditionally used in China, Egypt and India as a treatment for inflammation, infections and tuberculosis. In the 1980's, the gold-based drug auranofin was approved as an anti-rheumatic agent and is still in clinical use. In recent years, exploration of new indications (repositioning) for auranofin has also been considered due to its various physiological activities. In addition, after the approval of auranofin, gold complexes that have been considered stable have begun to be found to function as catalysts, and are now widely used in various organic chemical reactions. Furthermore, research on drug delivery and release systems based on gold nanoparticles has been conducted with clinical applications in mind. In this way, gold is not only a drug substance but also a very useful material for synthesizing pharmaceuticals and improving pharmacokinetics, and is one of the transition metals that are expected to further develop in the pharmaceutical field. In this symposium, the future prospects will be discussed comprehensively with the latest research results for each application.
