[S35] Frontier of photopharmacology for high-speed molecular movies of proteins

To understand the functions and regulatory mechanisms of proteins in detail, it is essential to track the chemical reactions and structural changes occurred in proteins with atomic resolution. Recently, utilization of X-ray free electron laser (XFEL) allowed us to visualize high-speed molecular movie which was triggered by photo-irradiation. However, light-activated proteins such as rhodopsin are very limited. Photopharmacological tools, which can control protein function by photo irradiation, are expected to overcome this limitation. The new chemical tools would be applied for visualizing high-speed molecular movie of various proteins. In this symposium, we will introduce recent progress on high-speed molecular movie of proteins using XFEL and newly developed photopharmacological methods. We will also discuss the possibility of photopharmacological tools as a new tool for controlling cellular functions.
