The standardization of exchanging geological/geotechnical model data in the BIM has been revisited and discussed in the buildingSMART International for the revision of the existing standard. A geological/geotechnical model in the civil engineering field should contain uncertainties because it is an interpretation model based on measurements and observations depending on the project-specific purpose and usage, unlike structural models, which represent building structures like tunnel, bridge, and road. As those uncertainties may cause construction risks both in physical and economical, it is essential to exchange information about them along with the model data. Furthermore, the reduction of uncertainties in the model by adding more information such as other types of measurement and/or observations is often required in order to build a more accurate model, which may lead to an optimized design of a building structure and possibly to the reduction of cost and risk. We have been working on an accurate interpretation of subsurface condition and reduction of uncertainty in the geological/geotechnical models by taking geophysical survey results into account. In addition, methods to represent uncertainties in 3D models is being developed. Our attempt to include geophysical data into the BIM data exchange standard accelerates the application and use of geophysical exploration in the BIM field.
