[GP-06] Investigating inner structures of asphalt pavement using ground-penetrating radar
Information of boundary depths in pavement is important to manage the road. Falling weight deflectometer which is used to check the health of internal pavement requires the pavement structure for precise analysis. Early detection of deteriorated region in the pavement is useful to set appropriate region and time to reconstruct base course not only surface course.
We show some results of test to survey pavements using several types of ground-penetrating radar in this report.
First, we show simple GPR results detecting pavement structure with boring information. GPR has high performance to detect the horizontal continuity of pavement partially than visual examination. It can also detect the boundary between upper and lower base course.
However, multiple reflections between the face of antenna and road must decrease S/N at the time of high-speed scanning. Horizontal boundaries conflict the multiples which is different from cavities. We examined the quality of sections to reduce multiple noise on records acquired on a pavement.
On the other hand, to manage the thickness of surface course is important to keep the pavement with good performance. The record of GPR with high frequency can detect the thickness distribution of surface course with the accuracy of a centimeter.
Finally, moisture is one of the main factors to deteriorate pavement and it is useful for the maintenance of pavement to detect the infiltrated range of rain water into the pavement. We show some research results to detect the range of high water content using GPR.
In this report, we introduce above series of test results with GPR on our test roads.
