Impact force may act on structures in cases of collision with artifacts such as vehicles, aircraft, and during events caused by natural disasters such as tsunami driftage, slope failure, flying objects from tornadoes. In recent large-scale natural disasters, collision damage to structures caused by volcanic debris, tornado missiles, slope failure, etc. has been reported. In the field of nuclear engineering, many collision problems such as turbine missile and aircraft collisions have been discussed for a long time.
The Nuclear Regulation Authority published the “Tornado impact assessment guide of nuclear power plant” in 2013 and the “Review guide on aircraft impact assessment for practical nuclear power reactors" in 2014 to evaluate the impact of projectiles colliding with nuclear facilities.
Under these circumstances, the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers has issued the “Guideline for structural integrity evaluation method due to load of tornado missile" in 2019. Regarding the evaluation of impact on buildings by artifacts, the ISO standard (ISO 10252) was published in 2020 for the design of structures against accidental action, along with EUROCODE (EN 1991-1-7, 2006), etc. Moreover, "Introduction to shock-resistant design of buildings" was published by the Japan Institute of Architecture in January 2015, and the part of impact load was introduced in “AIJ Recommendations for Loads on Buildings” for building design in March 2015. However, the importance of impact problems has continuously increased.
In this session, based on the above situation, we will introduce and discuss current regulations and research trends related to impact issues such as collisions and explosions, etc., for nuclear facilities in Japan.
