Thu. Mar 7, 2024 10:55 AM - 12:35 PM 315 (Conference Center 3F)

Chair: Paolo Contri (International Atomic Energy Agency)
Co-Chair: Tatsuya Itoi(The University of Tokyo)

There are variety of natural as well as human-induced hazards that may impair nuclear plant safety such as Earthquakes, Tsunami, Strong winds, Volcano eruptions etc. and their combinations. The Fukushima accident was really triggered by the earthquake ground shaking and the following great Tsunami waves. After the accident, not only earthquakes but also other natural and other hazards have been taken into consideration for assurance of nuclear power plant safety. And many advanced evaluation methodologies, deterministic or probabilistic, have been developed so far and be currently used in the safety verification. In addition, combination of hazards are recently being discussed as one of major lessons learned from the Fukushima accident. The present special session will focus on the recent achievement of assessment methodologies and address the future challenges.
