With the development of cooperative driving methods, it is possible to optimize the lane changing methods before merging points to reduce traffic congestion. Most of the research in this field has focused on how to change lanes safely, but have given less priority to the concept of when to change lanes. In this paper, we propose a method to reduce vehicle travel time by calculating the optimal distance to change lanes from a merging point. We also demonstrate a strong correlation between the optimal lane changing distance and the average travel time based on traffic density at a merging point.
