We propose a novel real-time 3D magnetic motion-tracking system using multiple identifiable, tiny, lightweight, wireless and occlusion-free markers. It provides reasonable accuracy and update rates and an appropriate working space for dexterous 3D interaction. This tracking system has two versions; IM3D is the simplest implementation that supports 5DOF motion tracking with a single LC coil as a marker, while IM6D is a 6-DOF tracking system by integrating three LC coils into a single rigid trackable marker. This paper describes the theory and implementation of our new magnetic motion tracking system. Our experiments show that the system can precisely track multiple targets within a semi-sphere tracking space with 150 mm radius.
