[Workshop] Equine Workshop in JRA Ritto TRC

Mon. Aug 31, 2015 12:15 PM - 6:00 PM JRA Ritto TRC (Shiga Prefecture)

With a huge body and being rough in nature, the racehorses are prone to an anesthetic accident such as bone fracture during induction and recovery from general anesthesia. The phase of getting down and up is done in a daze. Standing surgery may minimize those risks and contribute to safe anesthetic management in racehorses. However, standing surgery requires a definitive protocol for sedation and local anesthesia to ensure secure immobilization. We, at the medical center of the Japan Racing Association (JRA) have established a protocol for sedation and local anesthesia for standing surgery and various procedures including standing MRI. In this satellite workshop course, we will introduce the sedation protocol that we routinely use at JRA.

This satellite course will be provided in the JRA Ritto Training Center, one of the biggest horse training facilities in Japan. The Racehorse Hospital at the Ritto Training Center was newly built in the fall of 2013. Thirty veterinarians provide veterinary care to over 2,000 racehorses at the Ritto Training Center. This Racehorse Hospital introduced the equine standing MRI machine in 2013 and the workshop course includes real-time MRI imaging of the hoof of a horse. We are very happy to welcome you in this new facility.

We look forward to your participation!
