[JS2-2] Island Doctors; Rural Generalism in the Torres Strait Islands of Queensland, Australia and the Inaugural Family Medicine Programme in Tonga

Samuel Jones (Medical Director Primary Health Care Northern Sector, Australia)

I am originally from the Forest of Dean, rural Gloucestershire, UK, completing my Medical degree in Manchester, UK in 1998. Traditional GP training was completed in Liverpool, UK in 2004 prior to working with MSF in Southern Sudan the following year. Moving to Badu island in the Torres Strait, QId, Australia to be the solo island doctor in 2010 with my intrepid nursing wife was a wonderful decision. 2 children over the following 5 years and the opportunity to train remotely supervised with the remarkable Remote Vocational Training Scheme led to Fellowship with the Australian College of Remote and Rural Medicine. I became an Australian Rural Generalist. As a founding Director of Rocketship (Remote Opportunities for Clinical Knowledge Education and Training for Support of Health in the Pacific) I have been involved in the development of Rural Generalist and Primary Health Care support and training initiatives in Vanuatu, Timor Leste and now Tonga. It is a privilege to work alongside and support the training of the fantastic doctors, nurses and health workers in these beautiful neighbouring Pacific countries.
