Evelyn van Weel-Baumgarten has been a general practitioner for over 30 years. Until a few years ago she combined clinical work with teaching and research at the Department of Primary and Community Care at the Radboud university medical center in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. She became involved in developing and teaching of communication skills in 1987 and has coordinated the clinical communication skills program at her medical school until her retirement in 2016. She is the immediate past-president of EACH: International association for Communication in Healthcare. She defended a thesis on the long term follow-up of depression in primary care, acquiring a PhD in 2000 and was appointed associate professor in 2004. She has written many peer reviewed papers, book chapters, training manuals and programs for various health care professionals on depression, problem solving treatment, and a variety of communication skills related topics. After retirement she continues to teach and to supervise PhD students locally and she is a member of rEACH, the research sub-committee of EACH and facilitates EACH and other courses and workshops. Her focus is currently on developing and facilitating integrated and contextualized courses which are meant to bridge the gap between teaching and clinical practice
