[16E-SIS14-04] Special Invited: Digital Transformation in Powder Metallurgy -Applied to Cemented Carbides
Keywords:Cemented Carbide, Modelling, WC, Hardmetal, Digital transformation
In this work an overview on how the digital transformation within materials design of cemented carbides started and is used today is given. Cemented carbide, as a material, were invented in 1923. Already, in the 1950ies microstructure modelling and predictions of WC grain size and binder mean free path was done. The digital transformation really took off when thermodynamic modelling using the Calphad technique was pioneered on the W-Co-C system in the 1970-1980ies. Since, then digital tools for modelling across length scales has been applied, from ab initio/ first principles on the atomic scale to Finite element modelling on the macroscale. In addition, modelling tools for WC grain growth during sintering, compaction density distributions and more are today useful digital tools in this industry.
