This talk presents an in-depth investigation of the cracking phenomena in composition-graded materials (CGMs) of 316L stainless steel (SS316L) and Inconel 718 (IN718), fabricated using the advanced direct energy deposition (DED) process. To mitigate cracking in these CGMs, a comprehensive thermodynamic analysis was employed to strategically avoid concentrations prone to crack formation. Utilizing the innovative locally compositional detouring (LCD) method, this research successfully demonstrates the fabrication of a crack-free CGM. This was achieved through a nonlinear blending of SS316L and IN718, enhanced by the introduction of additional elemental powder in regions susceptible to defects. The process was meticulously executed using a multi-powder feeding system, integral to the DED process. This approach not only circumvents the formation of cracks but also paves the way for new possibilities in the additive manufacturing of complex materials, showcasing potential for wide-ranging industrial applications.
