[16F-SIS9-01] Special Invited: Machinability of Hot Isostatic Pressed D2 Steels
Keywords:machinability, hot isostatic pressing, D2 steel
Hot isostatic pressing (HIP) is a very efficient and versatile process to manufacture mold and tool materials, such as D2 steels. To reduce mold cooling cycles and enhance productivity, 30% (vol.) highly thermally conductive copper particles were added to the D2 powder to produce new HIPed D2+30%Cu. In order to evaluate and compare the machinability of D2+30%Cu with pure D2 steel, machining tests were carried out using carbide tools under different cutting conditions. It was found that the cutting force and thrust force were reduced by 20-50% when machining D2+30%Cu. The cutting force of D2+30% Cu was not significantly affected by the cutting speed. However, the thrust force of D2+30%Cu increases with the increase of cutting speed, which has the opposite trend compared with pure D2. Tool wear and chip morphology were also investigated in this study. The results show that D2+30%Cu has better machinability than pure D2.
