Keywords:Design for Additive Manufacturing (DfAM), Powder bed fusion of metals by a laser beam (PBF LB/M), Aluminium Alloy AlSi10Mg, Biomimetics, Topology Optimization

PBF-LB/M offers great potential for the efficient and direct production of complex and functional components made of metals. Previous research shows that the mechanical performance of components could be enhanced through the incorporation of biomimetic shapes, such as banana pseudo stem-inspired biomimetic beams. This work focusses on three common mechanical topology optimization problems, employing AlSi10Mg as the chosen material. Leveraging these models, novel component designs featuring biomimetic beams and novel node designs were developed based on the input topology optimization. The new biomimetic component designs are compared to the respective topology optimization counterparts, that were taken as references. Numerical analyses of mass and structural integrity were done to investigate the improvement due to the biomimetic approach. It could be shown that efficient component design for additively manufactured components can be developed with the methods presented in this work.
