In this study, titanium carbide(TiC) particle-reinforced iron matrix composites were fabricated by using spark plasma sintering(SPS) technology. The effect of the TiC content on the relative density, microstructure, mechanical properties, and wear resistance of TiC/Fe matrix composites was intensively studied. The improvement of mechanical properties and wear resistance was attributed to the effect of enhanced pinning of TiC particles around the iron matrix due to the increase in the relative density of the composite. The main fracture mechanism of TiC/Fe matrix composites was a combination of plastic fracture of the metal matrix, intergranular fracture of TiC, and transgranular fracture of TiC. The dominant wear mechanisms of TiC/Fe matrix composites were oxidation wear and abrasive wear.
