Metastable β-Ti-1Al-8V-5Fe (Ti-185) alloy is a high-strength Ti alloy, but it has been an experimental alloy in conventional manufacturing since its invention in 1956 due to its high Fe content. This work investigates the additive manufacturing (AM) of this alloy by directed energy deposition (DED) and electron beam powder bed fusion (EB-PBF). Due to the inherently high cooling rates (103~105 ℃/s) during solidification, fusion-based metal additive manufacturing (AM) provides a promising method to suppress the microsegregation of Fe by solute trapping. Furthermore, we observed significant in-situ precipitation of the phases in DED Ti-185 and EB-PBF Ti-185 samples. These precipitate phases have a decisive influence on its tensile properties.
