[16P-T14-05] Fabrication for Transition Metal Diborides Using Spark Plasma Sintering Method

Transition metal diboride with an AlB2-type structure shows excellent mechanical properties, wear resistance, and high-temperature stability. TiB2, a transition metal diboride, also has excellent mechanical and wear resistance properties. However, it is difficult to get pure, dense, sintered transition metal diborides as high temperature, high pressure, and sintering aids are required in the sintering process. We focused on spark plasma sintering (SPS), which enables rapid sintering by Joule heat generated by electric current. In this study, we fabricated (M, Ti)B2 diborides solid solution (M = V, Mo, W, etc...) by powder metallurgy method using SPS. According to XRD, (Ti, M)B2 solid solution with an AlB2-type structure was obtained. The detailed results, including microstructure observations and some physical properties, etc., will be presented on the day.
