Keywords:Sulfur, Fe-based amorphous alloys, Metalloid elements, Soft magnetic properties, Amorphous forming ability

Fe-based amorphous alloys are synthesized through planar flow casting to achieve high cooling rate. Higher amorphous forming ability (AFA) is achieved by adding metalloid elements with small atomic radius such as Si, B, C, and P. However, effect of sulfur on the soft magnetic properties of Fe-based amorphous alloys has not been researched. The atomic radius of S is similar to that of
P and Si atoms, which is expected leading to good amorphous forming ability. In this study, S content was varied from 0.3 to 2 at.% in Fe81.5Si3-aB13.5CbSx at.% (a + b = x, x = 0.3 to 2.0) alloy and then the thermal properties including thermal stability, crystallization temperature, and melting temperature were investigated. Furthermore, amorphous forming ability of as-spun ribbons were estimated with sulfur content. In case of the optimized alloy with an added 0.5 at.% S content, the saturation magnetization, coercivity and crystallization enthalpy were 183.64 emu/g, 32.06 A/m and 107 J/g, respectively. With the increase of S content, the AFA of as-spun ribbon improved but the saturation magnetization decreased.
