The usage of heavy rare earths elements (HREs) in permanent magnet is inevitable to enhance performance of magnets and thermal stability. However, due to maldistribution and limitedness of resource, recently, the field of the substitution of HREs in permanent magnets has been interested. Grain boundary diffusion process (GBDP) is a powerful method to improve the performance of magnets and reduce the cost of producing permanent magnets as one of the processes to reduce the use of HREs.
In this study, we designed a GBDP alloy based on La and Ce as a low-eutectic alloy. The alloy composition was designed using thermodynamic calculations and synthesized using an arc-melter and applied in N-grade commercial magnets. The thermal and magnetic properties were measured by using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and physical properties measurement system (PPMS). We will discuss the improvement of performance and diffusion behavior when coated with our GBDP alloy, compared to conventional magnets.
