ICD-11 was officially announced by WHO in 2018 and approved at the World Health Assembly in 2019. WHO’s member states including Japan have been preparing for the domestic introduction of ICD-11. For the domestic use of ICD-11 in Japan, translation of ICD-11 into Japanese is essential, which has been started led by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare. In order to translate ICD-11 into Japanese, it is necessary to conduct an appropriate Japanese translation of approximately 97,000 words, which are all items of the Foundation Component of ICD-11. In addition, it is necessary to ensure consistency with the relevant classifications which are developed by the academic societies and others and are currently used in Japan so that it is important to make an agreement with the relevant academic societies.Under these situations, this symposium will provide an overview of various achievements and issues remaining for the Japanese translation of ICD-11, and discuss how to sort out the issues for the Japanese translation as well as introduction of ICD-11 to Japan. Another purpose of this symposium is to discuss the appropriate introduction of ICD-11 to Japan.
