A ring resonator that achieves unidirectional lasing becomes important in the on-chip generation of novel optical beams like optical vortexes and in exploring non-Hermitian photonics. We numerically analyzed the lasing characteristics in a ring resonator equipped with an S-shaped coupler using the rate equation model. Our results show that cross-gain saturation is key to highly unidirectional and backscattering-robust lasing, while unsymmetrical coupling due to the S-shaped coupler guarantees deterministic lasing in the desired direction.
