[2C02] Development of Reuse Technology for Radioactive Waste Containers Using CW Fiber Laser Irradiation Method

We store the equivalent of about 130 thousand drums (200L) of radioactive waste packages in Nuclear Science Research Institute, JAEA. Most of them are carbon steel 200 L drums, and surface of them are rusted, so we have inspected and repaired them regularly. In this study, we will develop reuse technology for radioactive waste containers using CW fiber laser irradiation method. The method is consisted of rust removal technology and rustproof technology. The rustproofing of carbon steel is given by oxide film formation and crystal grain micronizing through quick heating/cooling cycle by laser irradiation. In this presentation, we will report the experimental results from laser irradiation to carbon steel.
