[H-CG35] [JJ] Future of transdisciplinary approaches with society to global environmental challenges

Mon. May 22, 2017 1:45 PM - 3:15 PM Poster Hall (International Exhibition Hall HALL7)

convener:Yasuhisa Kondo(Research Institute for Humanity and Nature), Akihiko Kondoh(Center for Environmental Remote Sensing, Chiba University), Koichi Kimoto(Kwansei Gakuin University, Center for Common Educational Programs), Koki Teshirogi(Research Institute for Humanity and Nature)

Environmental issues are typically caused by a wicked complex of natural and societal factors at diverse spatio-temporal scales from the global to the local. To mitigate these issues, transdisciplinary approaches are needed, in which scientists, decision makers, and other residents and business sectors share the scientific, governing, and local traditional knowledge systems to co-design a research project, co-produce knowledge, and co-disseminate options for making decisions, through dialogues and deliberations based on the mutual trust. These approaches require skill for interaction with diverse societal stakeholders such as governments, local municipalities, industries, non-profit organizations, landowners, and local residents, apart from the conventional procedure of science. This session will provide a foresight to the future direction of global environmental research via a better understanding of the current status and challenges of transdisciplinary approaches. We welcome any of reports, case studies, and theoretical debates from research projects applying (or planning to apply) transdisciplinary approaches.
