The formation of crude oil emulsion is a complicated process with different types of transformation. In this study, the formation process of crude oil emulsion was divided into three stages. The type and stability of crude oil emulsion were investigated mainly based on electrokinetic property and resolved water. The effect of various brine conditions including pH, ion composition, and ionic strength on crude oil emulsion formation and stability was investigated. Moreover, the influence of crude oil properties especially total acid number/base number (TAN/TBN) ratio and asphaltenes content on emulsion formation and stability was evaluated.
