An organic solid-state laser with a distributed feedback structure generates a stopband at a wavelength where the propagation constant satisfies the Bragg condition with respect to the lattice period, and oscillates at the edge of the stopband. However, by changing the thickness of the active layer and measuring the oscillation wavelengths of lasers with various propagation constants, it was found that the lasers also oscillate at wavelengths that do not match the Bragg condition. Systematic experiments revealed that the oscillation wavelength is the wavelength at which the coupling between different transverse modes satisfies the phase-matching condition, which is known to produce a mini-stop band.
