We have been developing a technique for analyzing cells using nanoneedles, which are an AFM tip fabricated into high-aspect ratio needle shape of 200 nm in diameter and more than 10 µm in length. By using antibody-modified nanoneedles, we developed a method to semi-quantitatively evaluate the amount of intermediate filaments in cells, and by analyzing force curves, we evaluated the mobility of intermediate filaments and clarified the role of the cytoskeleton in highly metastatic cancer cells.
