[VII-21] Attempt to isolate and culture methanogenic archaea using intracellular symbiosis between anaerobic protozoa and methanogenic archaea
Keywords:Anaerobic protozoa, Cyclidium sp., Methanogenic archaea, Intracellular symbiosis
It has been reported that hydrogen-assimilating methanogenic archaea coexist in cells of anaerobic protozoa and convert hydrogen produced in protozoa to methane. In this report, we considered that uncultured methanogenic archaea existing in the environment could be isolated and cultured. The anaerobic protozoan Cyclidium sp., Which coexists with hydrogen-assimilating methanogens in the cells, was isolated from the tank and co-cultured with the paddy soil to produce new methane-producing bacteria in the natural environment. We report on the results of an investigation into whether a symbiotic relationship can be established.
