[IS3] Carbon Neutralization Goals and Strategies in Korea's Coal-Based Steel Industry
キーワード:Carbon Neutralization, direct reduction iron, decarbonization, Hydrogen reduction steel process
The steel industry is a global target for carbon neutral policy transition, and thus a fundamental change in energy consumption is required. As of 2018, the steel industry accounted for 16.7% of Korea's total emissions and 35.8% of industrial sector emissions. In the current BF-based integrated steel mill, coal contributes to an energy-independent structure that is generally utilized for heat source, power generation, and steam production as well as reduction reaction. However, the steel process based on hydrogen reduction is expected to change into an energy-dependent industry that is affected by green hydrogen/ power supplied from an external energy grid. In order to effectively implement the energy conversion of the steel industry, a power mix structure with minimized carbon foot print is required, and at the same time, economical and sufficient green power and infrastructure requirements for supplying green hydrogen must be premised.
