Atmospheric correction over land is an essential process for ground surface reflectance products, which are derived from space-borne optical remote sensing data. Surface reflectance is very important for environmental research using higher accurate biophysical parameter estimations. General algorithm consists of Rayleigh scattering, absorption by atmospheric gases, and aerosol effects. Especially, removal of the aerosol effects is difficult because of spatial variability, time variation, and so on.

Himawari-8 was developed by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and launched on October 7, 2014, and the official operation started on July 7, 2015. JAXA provides Himawari-8 AHI aerosol products processed by the retrieval algorithms, which are very useful for high-frequency land surface reflectance processed by the atmospheric correction algorithm.

The instruments, Skyradiometer POM02, have been installed to measure the aerosol parameters over three validation sites, Tsukuba, Takayama, and Fuji in Japan. Obtained data are transferred to the SKYNET (http://atmos3.cr. chiba-u.jp/skynet/), which provides the aerosol parameters retrieved by using SKYRAD.PACK software package. Additionally, we also installed a CIMEL instrument (CE318TS9) at Tsukuba, that retrieved atmospheric profiles are available from the AERONET.

This research shows the validation and evaluation of Himawari-8 AHI L2ARP, L3ARP Hourly, and L3ARP Monthly products using SKYNET and AERONET data for all three validation sites.
