[MGI31-12] Lessons learned from interdisciplinary research between social and natural sciences

The field of geoscience presents numerous opportunities to conduct interdisciplinary research collaborations with the humanities and social sciences, particularly to address socio-environmental issues. However, gaps in research mindsets may disturb the effective sharing of data and knowledge among collaborators. In-project action research was conducted to understand how perceptual gaps occur and find solutions. It consisted of participatory observations, questionnaire surveys, and semi-structured interviews in several interdisciplinary projects, including the Historical Climate Adaptation Project of the Research Institute for Humanity and Nature and the KAKENHI PaleoAsia project, comprising social sciences (such as archaeology, history, and cultural anthropology) and geosciences (e.g., paleoclimatology and geochronology). This paper presents lessons learned from this action research from the perspective of open scientific knowledge production systems and discusses the resolution of gaps between different research mindsets and values.
