The Aakash project at the RIHN was initiated in 2019 with an aim to encourage social changes aimed at realizing cleaner air, improved public health, and sustainable agriculture, under the leadership of Prof. Sachiko Hayashida. Our research project attempts to understand the emissions and photochemical productions of PM2.5, assess the effects of air pollutions on human health in the rural areas of Punjab and Haryana, and the urban areas of the Delhi national captial region. We try to separate the industrial and agricultural activities on air pollution increase in the post-monsoon season in the northwest India region, towards providing effective solutions to mitigation of regional to city/district level air pollution. Finally, we work with the citizen groups to discuss solutions to crop residue burning, one of the main causes of air pollution increase during the post-monsoon season in the region.

Figure below shows the overall functioning of the Aakash Project at RIHN, Kyoto. As evident from this diagram, the research goal of the project is being achieved by active contributions from more than 70 researchers based in Japan and India.
